Concerns With The J & J Covid Vaccine and The AstraZeneca Vaccine

As of late, there has been a significant amount of discussion in the media regarding rare events that may or may not be related to these two Covid-19 vaccines. These vaccines are distinct from the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines.

About 7 million doses of the J & J vaccine have been given in the US. There have been events called Cerebral Sinus Venous Thrombosis (CVT). These are rare clotting events in the veins that surround the brain and drain blood back to the central circulation. These cases occurred in women aged 18-48. The events were recognized 6-13 days after vaccination.

In addition to the CVT, these patients had low platelet counts.

There have also been similar observations with the AstraZeneca Vaccine. About 25 million doses of that vaccine have been administered. There were 62 cases of CVT noted. In addition, there were 24 cases of another unusual clotting disorder called splanchnic vein thrombosis—the affected patients were almost all women under age 55.

Advice for those who have received the J & J vaccine here in the US would be to seek prompt medical evaluation and mention your recent vaccination if you experience:

  • Breathlessness
  • Pain in the chest or abdomen
  • Swelling or coldness in the leg
  • Severe or worsening headache or blurred vision, particularly beyond three days after vaccination
  • Persistent bleeding
  • Multiple small bruises, reddish or purplish spots, or blood blisters under the skin

If you have any concerns or questions, it is always best to seek advice from a medical professional.
